Dukes County Sheriff's Office

The Dukes County Sheriff's Office is at 9 Airport Rd, Edgartown, MA 02539. Call (508) 627-4353. The sheriff serves bench warrants across Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands. Because Dukes County is made up of islands, warrant service can involve coordination with ferry schedules and island-based police departments. That is different from how things work on the mainland.

Under M.G.L. c. 276, § 6, a bench warrant can be served any day at any time. On Martha's Vineyard, the sheriff works closely with the six town police departments on the island to carry out warrant service. If a person with an active bench warrant is on the island, local police may handle the pickup during a routine stop or call. The sheriff also handles transport off the island when cases need to go to other courts. You can reach the Dukes County government website for more contact details.

Island Warrant Procedures

Dukes County is unique in Massachusetts because the entire county sits on islands. That affects how bench warrants work in practice. Warrant execution may involve coordination with the Steamship Authority ferry service. If a person needs to be brought to a mainland court, transport logistics are more involved than a simple drive between towns.

The island geography also means that bench warrant activity can spike in the summer months. Martha's Vineyard sees a large jump in population from May through September. Seasonal residents and visitors who miss court dates in Dukes County may end up with bench warrants that carry over into the off-season. Law enforcement on the island stays alert to these cases year-round. If you have a bench warrant from a summer incident in Dukes County, it will stay active no matter what time of year it is. Massachusetts bench warrants do not expire.

There is no public warrant list for Dukes County. The state does not publish one. You have to check through the right channels to find out if a bench warrant is active.
